Layer ‘Em On

When it comes to fall style, there isn’t anything better than loading on the layers. Mixing prints, matching textures, popping in hints of color. It’s certainly an acquired look and one that can take a bit of experimenting before it feels right, but for layering newbies it’s all about keeping it to the basics.

I’ve gone for a more advanced look here in today’s Target x Merona style, but if you stripped away the prints, it’s really just your basic blouse, sweater and a great shawl collar coat.

When it comes to the layered look, what are your favorite ways to pile on the pieces?

The Modern Man

I spent a good portion of the weekend overhauling my closet as I continue to refine and establish a core style that transcends trends and remains stylish. That got me thinking about my husband’s wardrobe and men’s style in general. His closet is 1/4 the size of mine, yet he always looks fabulous. That’s because he has build a wardrobe based around a few key must-haves that simply don’t go out of style.

So for my latest installment with Target and Merona I thought it might be fun to switch gears for an afternoon and focus on men’s style. What are those must haves any man should have in his closet? While I believe it may vary slightly from man to man based on location, job and lifestyle, in general, the core pieces of a man’s wardrobe serve multiple purposes.

Take for example the pinstripe blazer. Worn as a separate with a pair of dress pants or combined with a gray hoodie over jeans, that same blazer goes from dressy to casual. Same goes for a pullover sweater or plaid button down. Paired with dressier pieces such as suiting separates or twill chinos and a brushed corduroy blazer, you’ve got a rather refined gentleman in front of you. Add a sleek sneaker and a brushed cotton pant and he’s ready to go for a weekend of apple picking.

It can be said I may have learned a thing or two from my husband’s wardrobe this weekend. And that is truly something I never thought I’d hear myself say!

One Blazer, Three Ways

I recently went on a no-shopping ban (unless it’s a gift for someone else) for the next 30 days. The reason for that being we’re gearing up to move in a few months, but also because I just bagged 4 large bags of clothing I either wanted to give to charity or sell consignment.

4 bags of clothing in less than a year? It was a huge reality check for me and how I shop. I can’t continue to buy items just because I have one outfit in mind. Any pieces I purchase moving forward, must have 9 lives, or at least a few different ways in which I plan to wear it.

So for my latest installment of Target Style x Merona I’m all about multi-wear pieces. And perhaps I could have chosen the simple black blazer, but I think we all know how to re-wear black. What I know I struggle with, and after polling a few readers, it’s definitely those printed or patterned pieces that often leave us at a loss. So let’s dive in to three ways to style a great fall and winter find with this blackwatch plaid number.

Fall Trends: The Classic Pencil

sweater | blouse | pencil skirt
trench | boots | tights | necklace

I don’t know about you, but fall is my favorite season. I love the weather, pumpkins, spices and naturally the fashion. While layers can be tough and sometimes exhausting to match together, they create such a look that is truly personal to your style. Since I’ve been spending a few days abroad in cooler temps than New York City, I have been taking notes of how the Parisians and Brits are putting their layers together.

I’ve teamed up with Target and Merona to highlight a few key trends this season, starting with my very favorite, the pencil skirt. It is a universally flattering piece, that is cut long and lean to complement nearly any figure. I love the versatility of mixing a pencil skirt with patterns, textures and prints so I thought it made sense to layer up with a look perfect for a bit of polish in the office or creative business meeting.

And yes, I’ve officially broken out the tights while in Europe, but tell me, what are you most looking forward to in fall fashion this season?
